16 Willow Gardens
A completely new format was used this year replacing the group based judging with which we started in 2011 with the emphasis on individual gardens. Strictly, it is not a competition, as there is no winner, but rather each garden is assessed and rated according to the judges' criteria.
The judges this year were Robin Russell, one of the regular assessors from Heart of England In Bloom and Peter Short of Birmingham City Council. Together, they covered the whole of our area in the pouring rain and we owe them a big vote of thanks for their efforts.
After the judges had completed their walkabout, we gathered together at the Grow Site in Coplow Street. Despite the inclement weather, there were around 30 hardy individuals who braved the rain to greet the judges.
During this period, the judging of the Cake Competition was done. Out of the several cakes on offer, this one was chosen:-
A tempting array of refreshments was provided by NSRA and, of course, the cakes from the competition could not be left untouched. So we all were able to indulge in a piece of cake (or three!).
The judges were impressed by a number of the gardens but awarded their top awards to just three gardens. A further 12 were given a Gold Award status.
